Eco-friendly home: How to be kinder to the environment around the house

21/05/2019 - ACE News

Recently, there has been a bigger push than ever for people to become more conscious of their impact on the environment, and to start using environmentally-friendly alternatives in their daily routine. At ACE we have a sustainability commitment and our goal is to provide the best cleaning performance and care for our environment – hence the launch of our fully recyclable ACE for Colours Powder! With this in mind, we’ve put together some tips for making your household a little more eco-friendly.

Natural nose

Store-bought air fresheners can be full of chemicals, which aren’t good for the environment or our health. There are lots of natural ways to get your house smelling lovely! Try boiling cinnamon, cloves, or any other herbs you can find. Alternatively, making fresh chocolate chip cookies (we love this easy recipe!) with the kids will not only be a great family activity, but will also fill the house with a delicious scent.

Cut tumble dryer use

Although tumble dryers are useful when you need to dry something quickly, if you aren’t wearing your laundry in the next hour it’s much better for the planet if you air-dry your clothes. The tumble dryer uses a lot of energy, so this will also save you money in the form of electricity bills. If the sun isn’t out, your clothes will still dry from the air – even if it does take a little longer! Invest in a clothes horse, or washing line, and hang your laundry out to dry in the garden – they’ll even get a lovely fresh smell, and many creases will naturally drop out which will make ironing easier too!

Decrease plastic use

Plastic seems to be a part of just about everything, – but it’s a non-biodegradable material that’s polluting the oceans and harming wildlife. Luckily, there are some easy steps you can take in order to decrease the amount of plastic used in your household. One of the easiest steps is to use reusable bags, like tote bags, rather than getting new ones every time you shop – you can get some great reusable bags that fold up to fit in your handbag! Other ways you can reduce plastic use include swapping plastic straws for paper, metal or bamboo ones, using a reusable water bottle, reusing food containers and using a razor with replaceable blades instead of a disposable one. At ACE we have started decreasing our plastic use by bringing out ACE for Colours Powder in fully recyclable packaging – a completely plastic-free product.

Reuse and recycle

When it comes to helping the environment, recycling is one of the key things that you can do! If you do have plastic items around the house, make sure you reuse them. Any items that are recyclable, make sure you recycle them – if you’re unsure which items are recyclable, this A-Z list is a great resource to refer to! If you have purchased our ACE for Colours Powder, make sure you’re recycling the Tetra Pak packaging.

Fix it, don’t throw it

As soon as something gets broken, or gets ruined, do you throw it away? Here at ACE we put importance on sustainability, and we think making your clothes last longer is crucial! If you get a stain on your clothes it’s not the end of the world, simply spray the item with ACE Stain Remover Spray, leave it to soak and then pop it in the wash with two tablespoons of ACE for Colours Powder. When kids are playing football at school, their trousers seem to – annoyingly – split all too often. If this happens, don’t write them off straight away, grab a needle and some thread and sew the hole back together – you won’t be able to tell it’s there!

Say no to single-use

Single use items tend to only be used for a few seconds, or even minutes, however their impact on the environment can last for thousands of years. With so many sustainable alternatives available, it’s easier than ever to think – do I actually need to use these items? Instead of makeup wipes, why not use reusable makeup pads like these from Amazon – and swap your cleaning wipes for a multi-purpose cleaner like ACE Stain Remover Spray and a reusable cloth? These may only seem like small swaps, but the impact on the environment will be massive over your lifetime.
